'A' or 'An"

General rule is "an" before a vowel. So what would the usage be in the case of "FIR" which stands for "First Information Report" used in India. Would it be "a FIR" or "an FIR"

Top answer

It depends on how you say it. Do you pronounce it ' an eff-ei-ahr' or do you say ' a fir'?

If you pronounce it "FIR" (as one word, as in fir tree), then it is a FIR. If you pronounce each letter: eff, eye, are, then it is an FIR.
