A or an

My grammar book says you should use an with an acronym that begins with a vowel sound when spoken, as in, "You are an NFL player". My boss says that a part number does not follow that rule. Here is my question: which sentence is correct?

Hi, I think every native speaker would say 'an', and so it should be written the same way. Clive
