A or An

Very simple question. I feel dumb asking this is it a united entity or an united entity?

I am 99.999% sure that it should be a united entity because an sounds just too awkward. Which one is it and what is the explanation for it?

The long "u" sound is pronounced "yoo". So, in effect, even though it doesn't look that way in writing, it "starts with (the sound of) a consonant". "a", not "an", is used before consonants, so it's "a".

  • The long "u" sound is pronounced "yoo".
  • So, in effect, even though it doesn't look that way in writing, it "starts with (the sound of) a consonant".
  • "a", not "an", is used before consonants, so it's "a".
  • a united entity, a uniform, a usually pleasant person, a European, a eulogy, a ewe, ...
  • Another deceptive one is "one", which is pronounced the same as "won", and therefore "starts with (the sound of) a consonant".
