A ____ of carrot

A ____ of carrot (I am referring to 1 unit of vegetable, not when you cut it into pieces. Do we use "stick"?).

A ____ of banana.

I can't think of the right word.

or do we just say "one carrot"?

It isn't elementary. In several languages that I know, there is a word for a single item; learners often translate this into English as 'piece'. We just don't use this word in normal conversation in English.

A: Can I have a kilo of potatoes and a carrot/banana please.
B: Just one carrot/banana?
