Hi, a herd of horses/goats/cows a pack of dogs/wolves a school of fish a great amount of money a lot of water What do you call the words underlined? I assume you are not asking for parts of speech. I'd call the first three 'collective terms'.

Thanks, Clive.

I mean quantifier. Do you call them quantifier?

Hi,

I'd call 'a lot of' a quantifier, but 'a herd' just seems like a pretty ordinary noun.

I hesitate a bit about 'amount'. Would you suggest 'a litre' is a quantifier? I doubt it. It's just a noun.

'A great amount of' does seem like a quantifying phrase.

Thanks, Clive.

But this time I'm still in the confused state.

In the interest of truth, what terms or nouns are quantifiers? Would you list more samples in order that I may have a concrete physical concept? Thanks.

Hi,

My Oxford Companion to the English Language defines 'quantifier' as 'a category of determiner or pronoun used to express quantity'.

It mentions many, a few, few, several, much, a little, little, enough, some, any, much, a lot of, a great deal of.

I hope that gives you the idea.
