Which one is correct: There was a number of my friends at the concert or There were a number of my friends at the concert ?

You have to use a singular verb after the number of and a plural verb after a number of.

Ex. The number of farmers is decreasing. (You are talking about the size of the group)

You are actually talking about the number not the farmers .

Ex. A number of options were suggested. (you are referring to a group)
