It's British slang dating from WWII. I'm not up-to-date on British usage so I don't know how much it is used today. BNC has only one match for it.

Gone for a Burton is British slang. But I think it may now be very old-fashioned.

The explanation I had heard was that there was a Burton Brewery, and the advertising for their beer involved people not present being said to have "Gone for a Burton". However, it seems this explanation is unconfirmed.
