Provide a motivation for embarking on a postgraduate public health programme.in the motivation, explain how this programme relates to our current work and future plans.(300-400words)
here is a sample of my letter.
In the early 1990s, my home town experienced recurrent malaria infections and there seemed to be no end to it. The results were devastating as a number of children died. Since then, I have been obsessed with disease and its impact on society. Later in 1999, I won an award in high school for my project on Malaria, its mode of transmission, pathogenesis and ways of prevention. Therefore I went to xxxxxxxxxxxxxx with a clear plan to study biology. My fascination with microorganisms deepened as I learnt their complexity in the courses I took such as microbiology, parasitology, molecular biology immunology and mycology. This enhanced my understanding of diseases pathogenesis, prevention and aspects of treatment interventions. During the course of my undergraduate studies, I was involved in a number of projects such as assessing the quality of water supplied to the surrounding communities by the sugar factory. As a research assistant for a xxxxx project on shistosomiasis, I gained hands on experience in disease research and enhanced my understanding of the importance of community heath and its determinants. After completing my studies, I worked as part of the health care team of a local nongovernmental organization as a laboratory scientist. My work involved mainly HIV/AIDS related diagnosis and monitoring of patient response to treatment and performance of their liver and kidneys using hematological and biochemical tests to ensure the all abnormalities were captured and reported for intervention purposes. During the same time I participated in Pharmacies African Studies to Evaluate HIV/AIDS Drug resistance and factors that influence its onset. It’s from the above background that I have come to strongly believe that working on preventative measures and other aspects of primary health care for the population is the key to achieving good health for all rather than concentrating on curative interventions. My passion to serve the needy in society has led me to the decision to pursue a master in public health in your department in order to broaden my knowledge. I am specifically interested in epidemiology and control of HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis but still flexible enough to explore other research areas of public health concern. Ultimately my goal is to facilitate and promote community health programs locally by working with public and private organizations. Therefore, once attained the MPH qualification could place me in the frontline of public health efforts in my country. It will benefit me in terms of enriching my research skills, communication skills and management skills required for effective assessment of community dynamics, raising community health awareness, developing proposals and health policies and implementation. Alternatively, it would help me progress to PhD studies and end up in academic career as a public health lecturer. The reputation of the department of public health at xxxxxxxxxxx university is excellent because the programme combination of courses and research challenges and enhances an individual to make a positive contribution as a specialist in the field. Studying in a foreign country would broaden my knowledge about different cultures and approaches to public health problems. I do understand your programme is highly competitive, however considering my personal experience, abilities, ambition and passion I can assure you that given an opportunity I would work diligently in order to excel in the programme. Thank you in advance, Lisa
