Vocabulary

A most

Hi.

What does it mean that:

"[...]capturinng all of you opponent's pieces can be a most effective way of winning the battle."

I mean, what does 'a most' mean?I always thought that most is always preceeded by 'the'.Could you please explain the use of the indefinite article?

Thanks in advance

Simple. "A" is for one among many. "The" is for one alone. The problem may be that "most" in "most effective" is used to mean "very" (So it would read "a very effective way...")

The most effective way to win at chess is ... (there is only one answer here)

A most effective way to win at chess is ... (there is more than one answer here because there are several "effective" ways)
