Hello. I'm writing an essay questioning 'What is justice'. However, it's quite hard to find an appropriate word contrary to 'the law'.
For example, I wrote a sentence like this; When a person murdered another man who confined him for 10 or more years, we encounter a moral dilemma where the law and ( ) conflict.
What vocabulary could I put in the blank? I thought of 'mercy', but I feel the word is too generous and also, I found that usually people contrast justice and mercy, not the law and mercy. I thought of the adjective humane, but because it's not a noun, I cannot adopt it.
Could you give me any advice?
