A mix of abilities vs mixed abilities

(1) The teacher has noticed that there are mixed abilities among his students.

(2) The teacher has noticed that there is a mix of abilities among his students.

Is there a difference in meaning between the two highlighted phrases?

They are both understandable and the same in meaning, but (2) seems better to my ear. CJ
