A million years

"The announcement [about the gravitational waves detection] ranked as the physics discovery of the year, confirming Einstein’s century-old theory of gravity and putting the Ligo team x-gu://item/mobile-apps.guardianapis.com/items/science/2016/feb/12/gravitational-waves-who-should-win-the-nobel-prize. But the real excitement is yet to come. For the first quarter of a million years, the cosmos was hidden from astronomers. Now scientists can build gravitational wave observatories and, with them, look back to the birth of the universe. We can study the moment of creation." (The Guardian.)

What does the sentence For the first quarter of a million years, the cosmos was hidden from astronomers exactly mean in the context above? Were there astronomers one million years ago? Or, is it (in my opinion, said in a clumsy way) something like For the first quater of a million years from the Big-Bang the cosmos was hidden from astronomers?

For the first quarter of a million years that the cosmos (universe) was in existence, conditions were such that there was not yet any light coming from the soup of particles generated by the big bang.

  • However, there were (supposedly) gravitational waves then, so now that we have a way of detecting those ancient gravity waves, maybe we can find out what happened during that "dark period".
