A massive/vast oak door

A _____ oak door marks the entrance to the big mansion.
Mr. Lin gained _____ knowledge by reading extensively.

Hi,
Do both massive and vast fit in the above two sentences and mean about the same? IF not, what are the basic differences between the two words? Thanks.

Top answer

No. Massive has to do with perceived weight and size; vast has to do with extent. Only massive works in your first sentence; only vast works in your second (I can see massive being used of knowledge in a somewhat jocular way, however).
