Hi,

Is the sentence a reflection of attitude? Yes.

If it is, what's the attitude? admiration

eg Winston Churchill was a man whose like we shall not see again.

(I guess it is negative.)

No. It sounds wrong to say

eg Hitler was a man whose like we shall not see again.

Hi, Clive!

I don't want to confuse the issue here, because your answer is so precise. However, I have in my head that it should be "likes". Have I just heard it wrong all these years? To be honest, the plural form doesn't make sense to me, but that's what I think I have heard. Thanks.

Hi Philip,

Here are a few relevant parts from my dictionary.

noun like - a counterpart; an equal; a similar person or thing (we shall not see its like again)

the likes of informal a person such as

(my example - We shall not see the likes of Winston Churchill again.)

Best wishes again, Clive

Thanks. Glad to know I wasn't making something up. [I need a reality/sanity check every now and then.]
