A Man of Importance : Meaning of "OF"

Teachers, I have a question about usage of 'of'. In the sentence above, what does the 'of' mean? Also what would be the meaning of 'of' in this: a house of a contemporary design? I'm guessing that 'of + a noun' and an adjective can be used interchangeably, like 'of importance' and 'important'. Then what would be the explanation for the second example: a house of a contemporary design? I have some more examples : a girl of his own choice ; the tree of my own planting.
