a make-up, why this word?



The best word for a girl changing her face state is a make-up, and my question is why in English is called that make-up if there's not a strong relation between the verb make and the preposition up. Which is the reason for calling make-up the English make-up?

Who could help me? Who is able to find its origin and tell me why?
