A lot of years/months/days/hours

According to the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English,

OK: The book took many years to write.
?Don’t say: The book took a lot of years to write.

However, I find quite a few examples of "a lot of years" on the Internet. Is it okay to use "a lot of years" in daily conversation?

How about "a lot of months/days/hours"?
