A LOT OF + (singular or plural nouns?)

Hi,

I'm studying English at the moment and I've a doubt. The nouns after "a lot of" have to be in singular or in plural?

Ex. Mary is doing a lot of exercise. or

Mary is doing a lot of exercises.

I hope that someboby can help me. Thanks.

Both of your examples are correct, but have different meanings. "Mary is doing a lot of exercise" means that Mary is doing a lot of physical exertion. "Mary is doing a lot of exercises" means that Mary is doing various types of physical exertion.

There are countable and uncountable words in English. Exercise is both of them. After "lot of" you can use plural and singular forms as well, it depends on the word.

For example:
- I've got a lot of friends.
- She's got a lot of free time-.
