A lot of easing

Hi,

"They introduced a lot of easing of the initial restrictions."

I came across this sentence on the internet, and I was wondering if 'a lot of' can actually be used before 'easing' like that.

Thanks a lot.

Yes, why not? Although it's a rather awkward-sounding sentence, probably because of the repetition of 'of'. The structure is a lot of + gerund.
