[A lot of / many / a large number of] people are all about the same, as far as quantity is concerned. I think the more important question here is one of appropriateness to the occasion. Because of the solemnity of the situation, I would avoid the informal choices and use 'a large number of', perhpas even 'large numbers of people'.
