A lot?

Should I avoid using ”a lot” in writing because it’s colloquial?

A) Her advice helped me a lot.

B) I’ be learned a lot from that experience.

Is it better to use the following?

A) Her advice helped me greatly.

B) I’ve learned a great deal from that experience.

"a lot" may seem out of place in formal contexts, but it is OK in everyday writing. Most probably it is OK in your sentences. Of course, even in everyday writing there is nothing to stop you using alternatives if that is what you prefer.
