a lot

"Do you know that he was on parole?"

"Well, no , not exactly," I said hesitantly, " I haven't kept in touch with him but I heard that he was in some kind of trouble." She smiled to me and said, " He's gone a lot . It's not safe around here for him .you know.

My question is : what does " a lot " here mean?. It stands for "He's gone long ago" or "He's gone very far from here" or just something else?

Thank you in advance!
