A long/longer life compared with

Are the following sentences both acceptable?

1. Fluorescent lamps have a long life compared with incandescent lamps.
2. Fluorescent lamps have a longer life compared with incandescent lamps.

The first sentence sounds okay to me and I'm not saying the second is completely wrong. However, because of the comparative, I would prefer: Fluorescent lamps have a long er life than incandescent lamps. CB

The first sentence sounds okay to me and I'm not saying the second is completely wrong. However, because of the comparative, I would prefer:
