A longing to join in on this kind of practical joke

Many wonder if flash mobs re just a flash in the pan. They'll be with us as long as poeple feel a longing to join in on this kind of practical joke.

Hi,
Is it correct and about the same to say "join" and "join in" instead of "join in on" in the above? Thanks.

'Join' alone is a little odd; 'join in' is fine.

Thanks, Mister.

I'm still confused. Why doesn't "join" work? Besides, if "join in" fits in the context, then why is there "on?" What does "on" mean? Thanks again.

'Join' = become a member, e.g. organizations or more formal social structures; 'join in (on)' = participate. 'On' is a particle indicating something that is progressing/active in some way.
