A long wave of improvement

Hi! Can you tell me why the writer uses "long" instead of "big" or "great"? I couln't find this collocation, I assume that it's a marked one, but I don't understand the purpose in this particular case. Thanks!

We were the beneficiaries of eight decades of astonishing technological change, and we subconsciously thought it would continue. But a long wave of improvement in everyday life came to an end in the 1970s.
