A little problem

Please help me with this underlined phrase. It is from "The adventures of Tom Sawyer". Although it belongs to literary canons, I couldn't find the explanaition of it. I mean quite precise meaning, word-to-word.

I don’t want ‘em souring on me and doing me mean tricks

Thanks a lot!

This apparently means: "I don't want them to start disliking me, after they've known me for a while, and then to start doing me harm."
