A little goes a long way

Halo!

Please help! How to understand this idiom?

I'm not sure it's an idiom. You only need a little bit of whatever it is to have a big effect or last a long time.

I think it's an idiom. If as you reach for the cayenne pepper for the chili we are cooking, I say "Careful, a little goes a long way," I don't really mean that anything's going to go anywhere. Except perhaps our dinner guests.

Okay, I'l buy that. It seems pretty - well, not quite literal to me, but not fully idiomatic. But either way, a little bit does a lot.

Actually, I believe it means too much of some things are not good.
