A list of (the) people

Do you teachers agree there is some odd about this sentence:

Could you please provide a list of the people who were at your party? It's the for police.

I think "the" looks odd there. I think "a list of people" sounds more natural.

I don't agree that it is odd.. It's fine and natural. It refers to a known and speciifc group.

a list of people sounds to me possibly 'some but not alll''.

"A list of people" sounds to me as some but not necessarily all. It's more than one, but it's not specific enough to assume that it's all of them.

"A list of the people", on the other hand, emphasizes that it's all of them that should be on the list.
