A lift

If a person wants a free ride in a car, etc. to a place he wants to get to, in the UK, this might be heard:

-Could I have a lift into town?

In the US, he might be said to have hitched a ride to the station.

But, say, it's raining, and a person, without an umbrella, wants somebody to share an umbrella with him, how should he phrase the question? I guess the word lift or ride is not applicable.

Thank you. J.
