"I'm a university teacher. I hope to get a chance to join in the programme mentioned. However, I'm not good at speaking English ,which is an urgent requirement that I have to speak English. Although I studied English in Canada (Ottawa) for a year, learning a new language in an old age near to fifties is not like learning in a young age. Anyway, thank you.

"Although I studied English in Canada for a year, learning a new language for 50-year old is not like learning in a young age."

learning a new language for 50-year-old is not like learning at a young age." (Poor structure)

learning a new language as a 50-year-old adult is not as easy as learning one as youngster." (Better structure)
