A legal term

I heard it several times on TV, but never figured out how it's spelt. It may even be a phrase. I believe it is used to characterize a statement that's given as personal view and cannot be entered as hard evidence. It sounds like this to me, "here say". What's that word? Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Thanks in advance

The word is hearsay , and it means information gained indirectly, kind of like gossip. It is not allowed in US courts as testimony.
