A learned ...

Hi

According to traditional Hindu myths, menstruation began when the

God Indra killed Vrita, a learned Brahman. As the story is told in the Vasistha

Dharma Sastra, when Indra realised the terrible crime he had committed, he ran

to the womenfolk and asked them to share his guilt.

--- Does it mean that Vrita was a learned Brahman (Brahmin)? If so, it's a bit strange to me because I've found on the internet that Vrita was a demon and not some learned Brahman?

EDIT: Well, actually I've found here http://www.mypurohith.com/encyclopedia/EnclopI.asp that Vrita was a demon and a Brahman. So I conclude that Vrita really was a learned Brahman (Brahmin).

By the way: "to share his guilt" means that Indra wanted women to take part (not the whole) of his blame for killing Vrita on themselves, right?

Guilt and blame are not quite the same. If I cause harm to someone by accident, no one may blame me but I may still feel guilty. I regret that it happened because of me, even though no one else holds me responsible.
