A large amount of confidential e-mails and documents

http://buswk.co/uGnRGU
Dec. 22 (Bloomberg) -- China-based hackers rifled the computer networks of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, stealing a large amount of confidential e-mails and documents in what a person familiar with the investigation described as a major security breach of the largest U.S. business lobbying group.

Why would it be correct to say "a large number of confidential e-mails and documents" instead of "a large amount of confidential e-mails and documents"? Would "amount of plural" be correct?

Top answer

I would have said "a large number of confidential e-mails and documents". Off-hand I can't think of a situation where "amount of plural" be correct.
