A kind of / kind of

Entering the bar to get some cheap vodka, he saw a man ordering expensive hard liquor and a fresh goat milk cheese. Suddenly he felt [kind/a kind] of envy toward the man but he began feeling a little better and enjoying the moment with the vodka.


I'd love to see which is right. I guess "a kind of" is correct.
