There is a kind of flower.......that only grows in Scotland. (example). There is a type of flower that is poisonous. (example) both are correct. You would not use "kind of" in the plural. You could theoretically say "There are kinds of flowers that only grow ....." equally, There are types of flowers that are poisonous.
