A Journal of Arthur Schlesinger's

I am a English learner, I could not quite understand this journal. So I come here to ask for help.

The content is," We heard Adlai's enormously effective speech of welcome to the convention (really a speech of keynote, nomination and acceptance rolled into one) and Paul Douglas's noble if heavy speech on the Korean War. Adlai's speech even made a dent on the strongly anti-Adlai atmosphere of the Harriman headquaters."

I don't know much about Adlai, but I've searched by(I don't know if using "by" here is right) google.

What do "speech of welcome to the convention"," really a speech of keynote, nomination and acceptance rolled into one" and "Paul Douglas's noble if heavy speech on the Korean War" mean?

It happened in 1952.
