"a Japanese party"?

A friend of mine wrote,
"I went to a Japanese party tonight."

He called it "a Japanese party" because (1) this party was hosted by a Japanese guy, and (2) most people at the party turned out to be Japanese, although there were several Irish people too.

Is "a Japanese party" a correct way to call it?
Does it make sense?

How about, "A Japanese guy hosted a party tonight, and I went there." or, "I went to a party hosted by a Japanese guy tonight."
