Vocabulary

A is met with B

1. Does "pathos is met with bathos" here mean "bathos substitutes for pathos" or "they come together as a whole"?

2. What do actually "pathos" and "bathos" mean here? I know that pathos refer to the stimulation of emotions in the audience. But, I am not sure about the meaning of bathos. In cinema and literature it seems to mean abrupt changes in the plot, however it does not seem relevant in this context.

Context:

A lot of performance art presents the world as an irrational and indifferent place where pathos is met with bathos – Brian Catling, Bobby Baker, Gary Stevens.
