A hundred-bridge word

In English, we can do the dishes, do an exam, etc. In other words, do can be used in collocation with a number of words. In my first language, such a word is known as a hundred-bridge word, because we can use it to 'bridge' a number of words, but what is it called in English?

We have several verbs that are used extensively: do, make, have, get are just a few examples. I don' know that we have a term for the verbs themselves, but they make up hundreds of idioms that we use every day.
