A howling?

He heard a howling.

Question 1: Can I say 'a howling' instead of 'a howling sound'.

Question 2: Is 'some howling' to replace the above underlined phrase?

Thanks.

I would just say: He heard howling. You can say "I heard some howling" or "I heard a howling sound. (Howling here is an adjective).

  • I would just say: He heard howling.
  • You can say "I heard some howling" or "I heard a howling sound.
  • (Howling here is an adjective).
  • I don't think I would normally say "I heard a howling" and leave it at that.
  • It would be better if you gave the source and a location: I Heard wolves howling outside.

It would be better if you gave the source and a location: I Heard wolves howling outside. I heard a howling that could only come from an angry wolf.

I hope this helps.
