A HOSPITAL-BASED CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY: PATTERNS, EPIDEMIOLOGY CHARACTERISTICS OF CANCER PATIENTS FROM 2008 TO 2018 IN HUE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, VIETNAM

Aim: To describe cancer patterns and cancer patients’ characteristics in Hue University Hospital from 01/2008 to 12/2018. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study calculated from available data from medical records of all newly diagnosed and treated cancer cases in Hue University Hospital from January 01st 2008 to December 30th 2018. Data was manually collected from medical records, classified according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). Results: Of 2.008 cancer patients registered during the study period, the male to female ratio was 1,2:1, the median age was 53±14,9 years. Malignant neoplasm of digestive organs (42,0%) was the most common to occur according to ICD-10 classification, followed by malignant neoplasm respiratory and intra-thoracic organs (18,4%). For males the leading cancer sites were liver (22,2%), lung (20,4%) and stomach (12,7%), whereas those for females were breast (28,7%), lung (12,5%) and thyroid (10,2%). The proportion of microscopically confirmed cases was 84,9%. 57,4% of cancer patients came to the hospital at the late-stage; among them, liver and lung cancer were the two most common types of cancer diagnosed with late-stage (86,8% and 68,2% respectively). Surgery was the first mainstay for treatment of various types of cancer (43,8%), followed by symptomatic, chemotherapy and radiotherapy (27,5%, 13,6% and 7,1% respectively). Conclusion: Cancer was more commonly diagnosed in males than females. For males, the leading cancer sites were liver, lung and stomach whereas those for females was breast, lung and thyroid. The median age was 53±14,9 years. Just under 60% of patients were presented with a late-stage; among them, lung cancer took the top position, followed by liver cancer.
