A high temperature

My son has a high temperature.
Here I know if I see "a" mean the following noun is countable but how do I know it is countable?
I can not put a number in front of it .
What rule do we use to test or identify that the temperature in the given context is countable. To me it looks like an abstract noun which are generally non count.
Thanks
