a heavy list

"They both looked across the ridge in the direction of Adage. At the point where they stood it was nearly a mile wide. It sloped perceptibly toward the southern edge, giving all the earth the appearance of a heavy list. "

I cannot find the right meaning of list in the last sentence. What is a heavy list? Can you please explain? Thank you in advance.

I believe that list here is used to indicate a sloping from an upright or normal position. It's often used when a ship is beginning to sink, as well.

Heavy list here means leaning noticeably to one side. List in this sense is more commonly used to refer to a ship that is not level in the water.
