A hand crank

(Summary - I can't tell you the full story)

..

"We send 75000-100000 sales letters a week."

"This is like a hand-crank on a cell phone."

___

(If I summrized it correctly)

Does "a hand-crank on a cell phone" have another meaning as a metaphor?

Thanks.

Of course we don't know what "this" is. Apparently, something which is otherwise very modern and convenient has some aspect which is slow, awkward, and inconvenient. As you probably know, the original wall-mounted "party line" telephones had a hand crank which I believe was used to get the operator's attention.

  • She would then ask your number and hand-connect the wires (plug them in) at the central office.
  • The crank would be a symbol of obsolesence, especially when juxtaposed with the cell phone, which symbolizes speed, convenience, and miniaturization.
