A half of something

Hi

Does "a half of the plate" mean, a physical half as contrasted with "half a plate" or "a half plate" which are measurements? Do I understand this correctly?

Thanks!

Thank you!

Is it also possible to say "He broke the plate in half, so he picked up [one/a] half of [it/plate]..."?
