Also common: He likes playing the guitar (in general).

I have no doubts about your pieces of advice, but my whole life I've been taught not to use an article in "play + instrument".

E.g.:

"I've been learning to play guitar for five years."

"I play guitar every day."

"I'm playing piano right now."

Etc.

The only case where I'd use an article would be if I wanted to refer to a particular, tangible ins

Thank you, but what's wrong with "Playing the guitar is his favourite pastime."? Why is that wrong and should be used without "the"?

Hi; There's nothing wrong with your version. I was simply giving a sampling of possible expressions (with the definite, indefinite and no article) to Vincent because he was confused.
