a great time if serious talking...

Hi guys,

The following sentence sounds a bit awkward to me. Can anyone tell me whether or not it's wrong, and if so, what's wrong about it?

We had a great time of serious talking and discussed a lot of nonsense while we were enjoying cakes and mince pies

I believe it's somewhere in the underlined part, but I don't know how to revise it.

Regards,

Vince

  • If my interpretation is correct, what this sentence said was: We had a great time talking and discussing about things of serious and unimportant nature while we were enjoying pies and cakes.

We had a great time of serious talking and discussed a lot of nonsense while we were enjoying cakes and mince pies

Maybe you could change it to "We had a great time. We talked seriously, and also discussed a lot of nonsense while we were..."

or

"We had a great time discussing both serious and nonsensical subjects while we were..."

We had a great time of serious talking and discussed a lot of nonsense while we were enjoying cakes and mince pies

The sentence appears to mean that we had a serious talk about nonsense. It doesn't make sense.

Serious doesn't have to mean just grave/solumn.

It can also mean sincere, determined, resolute, intense, and in this sense is often used to mean 'a lot of' and can be used quite humorously. I think this is probably the meaning meant here. Other examples are 'I did some serious Christmas shopping at the weekend'. this doesn't mean I was walking around being serious about it. It means I d

Can 'discussing' be used together with 'about'? I was taught by my teacher 'dicussing about' is wrong . Did my teacher teach me wrongly? She said the word 'about' is not required.
