A grammar question about future

Hi ya,

This following question is from a grammar book which is issued by Cambridge University press.

My sister ____ economics and politics when she goes to university.
A. studies
B. will study
C. is going to study

My question is why answer B is wrong?

To me, answer B is not wrong at all. However, C is a little better. The form "be going to" shows a plan to do something, and the simple future "will" implies certainty.

It is not wrong. It is a poorly formed question that CU press should be ashamed of. Both B and C are good answers.

Here is a list of future tense usage, Your example falls under future plans.

Will:
Facts
Believed Facts
Uncertain
*Moment of decision

Going to:
Predictions
*Future plans

*Will is used at the instant that plans are made or changed. Going to is used for plans that are already set
