A grammar dummy need desparate help!

which of the following is correct, using "will" or "would" and why? Basically in "I told them", it is a past tense, then from the past tense I am trying to use future tense... when do you use "will" and when do you use "would" anyway?

I told them that with their help, this event will make our club one of the largest social clubs in the school

or

I told them that with their help, this event would make our club one of the largest social clubs in the school
