A good vocabulary builder

Hi All,

I find that a word-of-the-day app or email service is a good way to improve one's vocabulary. There are plenty of them on the web, but none of them I found perfect for my needs. The problem is the following: Most vocabulary builders have in mind some test like the GRE, or some snobs that enjoy throwing in Latin words into conversations just for fun.
I've been living in the US for 3 years, and I work in an academic environment, but I have the impression that no one ever uses these words in everyday conversations or in real life situations (e.g. the GRE words).
So I am looking for some way to learn words that are actually used by reasonably educated people in everyday speech., but they are not too basic. Can you suggest something?
Thanks,
Andras
